먹방 (Mukbang) Monday: Dawon

This weekend, we wanted to go somewhere new and fun. An easy thing to cross off our bucket list was to go to a traditional tea house, called a 다원 (dawon). I saw a recommendation online for this small art gallery in Insadong that also has a dawon! The Kyungin Art Gallery is a group of traditional buildings with different art collections in each one, all set in an adorable courtyard.

After wandering around the gallery for a little while, we came to the dawon, which was just like a café in a traditional building that sells traditional teas.

We ordered two teas and some 유과 (yoogwa = fried rice cookie). Not cookies made of fried rice, they were rice cookies that have been fried!

차 means tea, so every kind of tea ends in "cha". My tea was 모과차 (mogwacha), otherwise known as Chinese quince tea. The quince fruit is similar to a pear and the preserves are used to brew tea in the winter. The 모과차 was very sweet and delicious, and it is supposed to be good for colds and other respiratory ailments!

Seong chose 감잎차 (kamipcha), which is made from dried persimmon leaves. It tasted similar to green tea, but better! This tea is high in Vitamins A and C and therefore supports the immune system.

At first Seong had some trouble with the hot water bottle, but he fixed it!

Both of the teas could be refilled with hot water to brew another few cups! (Maybe that's one reason they were so expensive!) The slices of 모과 fruit in the 모과차 (mogwacha) and the 감 leaves produced tea that was just as yummy as the first cup.

We had such a peaceful time drinking tea and enjoying each other's company. That's the real purpose of our bucket list - to get us off the couch and out having fun together!
